Copyrights Explained

There are several ways to copyright your music.

  1. Use the Copyright Office’s online registration system: The U.S. Copyright Office allows you to register your music for copyright protection online, through its eCO system. This is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to protect your music.

  2. Use a Creative Commons license: Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that provides free copyright licenses for creative works, including music. By using a Creative Commons license, you can specify how others can use your music and still retain some control over how it is used.

  3. Use the “poor man’s copyright”: The “poor man’s copyright” is a method of protecting your music by mailing a copy of it to yourself. The idea is that the sealed envelope, postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service, serves as proof of the date on which you created the music. While this method is not a substitute for a registered copyright, it may provide some limited evidence of your ownership of the music.

It’s important to note that none of these methods provide the same level of legal protection as a registered copyright. If you are serious about protecting your music, it is generally advisable to register your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office.
